Entry 31 Networking project

Update
I have almost finished both my project and the report to go along with it. the final problems i was having were fixed and mostly everything is working

Monday 13 October 2014

Entry 30 Networking Project

Update

At this point in the project I have finished configuring ip phones for local communication within a campus
the phone only work on ipv4 and not ipv6 on packet tracer. I am currently working on network address translation NAT . I may dual stack ipv4 with ipv6 on the central campus at  the pint where the dmz is located this will give access to the ipv4 users on the other  network to the servers.

entry 29 Networking project

Update

At this point i am finishing voip and i am finishing of implementing static routes an working on ipv6 to ipv4 communication. this is an almost complete project i am also working on the final report and the presentation. at this pint i may be able to setup ntp an aaa server if i have time at the end this is if packet tracer supports it and the hardware i am using in the classes will run  it without problems.

Entry 28 Networking project

Update

VOIP work on packet tracer i was using the wrong route on packet tracer and i have got it working with IPV4 but for IPV6 it dose not work the router taht is used is not compadable with IPV6 which means this is a limitaion of packet tracer this is at the near end point. Ospf is working on Packet tracer between campuses across both tunnel and frame-relay this is just for testing it only need to run across the tunnel because the tunnel is across  frame-relay.

Entry 27 Networking Project

Update

Today is the day milestone 2 is due I have adjacency working between router on the edge of each campus between the tunnels and the frame relay addresses. I was having problem so I erased the ospf configurations and redid them and then everything seemed to work  I am unable to explain why that happened but i am glad it is now working after an hour of doing that it was not time wasted. this is a good result adjacency still dose not happen between routers on each side of the ASA

Wednesday 24 September 2014

Entry 26 Networking project what I have done so far

What I have done so far
Milestone 1 Made up the design
Milestone 1 Setup  Dhcp for ipv4 on north and south and dhcp for ipv6 on central
Milestone 1 I have setup vlans for management, students, academic staff, and admin staff.
Milestone 1 /2 Have setup intervlan routing on some of the routers
Milestone 2 setup Ospf and check adjacencies
Milestone 2 Setup the vlans on that asas for dmz, outside and inside
Milestone 2 I have setup frame relay between campuses
Milestone 2 I have setup gre tunnels over frame relay

I have attempted to configure
Milestone 2 An ips this did not work
Milestone 2 Voip also did not work it is possible I will and will be configured
Milestone 2 IPsec VPN does not work on packet tracer so I had to go with  GRE Vpn

This point is milestone  2 due 26 September  2014
At this point dhcp is working alright and I can ping  from end host to end host one it has received and address via dhcp. Pinging Through the asa is hard and there is no sign of connectivity between inside to outside at this point. I have not set up many access-lists for the reason that they could interrupt with the testing and pings. I have made the tunnels and can ping from one side to another. But each time I set up all the campuses together I must reapply the source of the tunnel for it to activate.
I am also attempting to simulate an external web server for internet connectivity testing  the internet connection is at the central campus and for north and south the need to access it via the central connection to them
Ip phone will be setup as i now know how i can get it working i need to use a different router on packet tracer

Tuesday 23 September 2014

Entry 25 networking project

Update

I am in the middle of testing connectivity before i put in more access-list and i am still working on it and i have slowly made a few changes to get connectivity but not many changes. I am not able to ping through the ASA on packet tracer i am working out if it is possible. and setup more security on the network i main have been setting up the part of the network to see if they work before securing them on packet tracer. at this point i still have found no way of getting VOIP to work on the project and implementing an IPS I may experiment with an IDS. It is coming on well I will have to spent some time in the holidays working on it.
week 10 is at this point is going alright.

The project interconnection is working to a certain point i could not use ipsec tunnel I had to use gre
which is less secure but it is what is supported on packet tracer

Monday 22 September 2014

Entry 24 Networking project

Update

at this time I a trying to get the access-list applied to the stimulation. It seems to be working so far. and i am attempting simulate an ISP I am still working out how to do that. as it is thing seem to not work on packet tracer that I was going to setup so i will have to work on that. I am also preparing for my milestone 2
and most of it for milestone 2 is working.

so far it has take shape nicely and I have almost done what part of the project that can be successfully done on packet tracer. i have attempted to start the report but i do not have all the information to be able to finish it at this point.

Sunday 21 September 2014

Entry 23 Networking project

Update

At this time I am hitting alot of limitations of packet tracer in my project this is the fact it will no run ips and I cannot find a way to run VOIP on the project network this means that I cannot configure these things as apart or my project on the simulation and i maybe likely to finish  a few others i will work on stimulation of an internet connection. I am still investigating into these problems

Thursday 18 September 2014

Entry 22 networking project

I have been currently working on ipv6 on the Central and had to make the simulation smaller to prove connectivity due to the hardware I running it on is not fast enough to run all the redundant paths so I just have the main ones in place and it is working on the central Packet tracer is limited and the lab hardware. the simulation still proves connectivity and that is all works so that is the big thing.

At this point most things are working and are the project is on track to be finished in week 11 but i have until week 12 so that seems good for now I am finishing the project and beginning to write the report and prepare the presentaion

Tuesday 16 September 2014

Entry 21 Networking Project

Update

For now I have been configuring GRE tunnel between each of the campus. I have connectivity Between each campus through GRE tunnel. each time setup the project on the computer I have to configure the source overtime it is setup it dose not save the source interface in the configuration in packet tracer and it will not accept a source ip address i have tried to do that as an alternative it will still not work I am trying to test ipsec tunnel on packet tracer at this time i am not sure if it will work.I have setup the vlans and interfaces on the asa with security-levels and the basics only asa 5505 available on packet tracer.

Next

This is where I will attempt to setup ip sec tunnel if i cannot this is a limitation on the software
I am going to setup voice over ip and the final stuff for ipv6 and setup Nat or ipv4 tunnel through ipv6.

Wednesday 10 September 2014

Entry 20 Networking Project

Update

At this point I have successfully configured and tested frame relay on the networking and the interconnection between multiple Computers in the Lab class Has been successful

Next step

attempt and finish configuring VPN tunnels between campuses to Begin with GRE tunnel

This is where I am at this stage at the end of week 8  milestone 2 due week 10

Tuesday 9 September 2014

Entry 19 Networking Project

Update

Testing with frame relay has finally finished and I am beginning to Implement it using Sub interfaces
It is slowly being configured and so far is working. The tunneling is going to put in when the connectivity over frame-relay is complete. I had to setup a cloud in packet tracer for the reason I could not apply static frame relay commands on a router or a switch I have not figured out why at this time all i know is so far the other way is working.

Monday 8 September 2014

Entry 18 Networking project

This is what is current

At this point in the project I am working on the addressing for the interconnection of the project This is on
the frame relay network in the middle of the network. This connection is slowly taking shape with everything being tested at this point The project is on track I just have to test it for now.  I am working on The tunneling between the sites and campuses.

Difficulties in the in Current step

At this time I am having trouble with tunneling Tunnel do work but due to limitations in the software I cannot setup everything with tunneling that would be ideal I am still figuring out the limitations before I apply it to the The project simulation.

Next steps

This is setting up access from each campus to the dmz due to the fact that I have IPV6 on one campus
I have to setup communication between IPV6 and IPV4 Networks The dmz on the central should be accessed From each campus i have to make this work in one or the ways possible line For example Nat option for ipv4 to ipv6 or tunneling IPV4 through IPV6.

Configuring more on the asa and setting up an IDS and IPS if possible i have to test this

Research

At current VOIP has been in my current research. Along with Configuring An IPS, IDS and ASA setup for security.

For now this is what is happening just for an update on my project

Sunday 7 September 2014

Entry 17 Networking Project

The interconnection now works on the simulation. The multi-user mode is now working now to implement the test the Frame relay at the moment the middle frame relay is a work in progress it finally has progress
Basic test on frame relay has happened tested separately so I will have to see how it works on the simulation
Things are almost on track which is at this point important.
So for now I better get back to doing my project.

Entry 16 Networking project screenshots

Screenshots

Central Design done on Packet Tracer

North Design Done on Packet tracer

South Campus Design on Packet Tracer

These are screen shots of the cut down devices design to test the system is working
all of these were take while the program was loading and not all links were active this just gives a small idea into what it looks like from a device point of view. just to note that all end devices are clustered in groups.
these images are just a basic look of the project

Entry 15 Networking project

At this time I have been working on the interconnection between site I have had an interesting time trying to link simulations together.  I have been in the beginning stages of setting up frame relay on the project and also from the project brief deciding a more detailed security policy for the network. at this time it is a cut down version on the end networks because of software and computer limitations I will upload picture of my project so far as my next post so for now i am working on it and i will have to see how far I get by the end of the day

Monday 1 September 2014

Entry 14 Networking project

I have lowered the amount of devices in the project on packet tracer and nearly all of the problems I was having have been solved this was because the simulation was overloaded for the the computer I was running it on connectivity everything works at the moment.

I have been thinking more about setting up VOIP and Frame relay at this time in the project thing in this respect are on track  and  designing the interconnection between the campus. also working with the scaling
of running voice over ip internally. also looking into VOIP on a larger scale on the network and experiment if it works if i have time to set it up.

Entry 13 Networking Project what I have done so far

Just to give an up date on the status of my project all designs are close to finished
This is as of week 6  29 of august

Site 1

Central

This campus is running IPV6

I  designed it to specifications given in week 1 by supervisor.
I have setup a basic addressing scheme. I also setup dhcpv6 .
I have setup vlan 10,20,30,90.
I have setup ether channel to have better bandwidth between devices.
also have setup password for vty, console and enable.
I have setup remote connection via ssh

Site 2

North campus & South

This campus is running IPV4

A dhcp server has been setup. addressing has been applied to interface of the router
I have Setup encapsulation dot1q for each planned vlan on the Dhcp and a dhcp pool for each vlan
Has configured  vlan 10,20, 30, 32 and 99.
have setup ether-channel on the switches where need and have also setup Hsrp where needed
also have setup password for vty ,console and enable.
I have setup remote connection via ssh
have a spanning tree portfast , bpdu guard and rapid-pvst

at this time i have tried to keep north and south up to the same stage

Research

So far I have researched on how to setup voice over ip
Have researched on how to setup IDS and IPS
Have researched to to configure ASA
Have done some reading up in frame relay
also done some Research into wireless
Also looked at different sorts of authentication
and starting to look at communication between IPV4 & IPV6

Attempted

I have attempted to configure an ASA and IPS I still need more practice before
I imperilment it in the design
I have also attempted Configuring VOIP  on ipv4 and Ipv6  this is still in the beginning stages

Difficulties

I have had problems with implementing a few spanning tree configuration I am still working on this .
I am going to downsize the network for testing for connectivity and if the network operates properly the simulation is being over loaded I think.
I have had problems with dhcp this maybe because the stimulation is being over loaded.

Limitation of Software

so far limitations have meant that i must use hsrp instead of what i may have use Glbp because packet tracer would not accept the commands.

This is a basic overview so far of what i have done in the project

entry 12 networking project

At this time I am working on implementing md5 authentication with ospfv2 for ipv4 and ospfv3 for ipv6. This is going quite well with not much hidden challenge. I am also working out what to implement in the way of access-lists and where to implement them.for now things are looking quite good i am unsure when i will have it implemented in all the different campus networks. I am also implementing  per vlan dhcp for different levels of access on the network.  this is what is in progress to date i have implemented hsrp for the reason that glbp will not function on packet tracer.

Monday 25 August 2014

Entry 11 networking project/ addressing

Setting up dhcp in a network this size has started to become a challenge and i am unsure how long it Will take me to Finish it I planned to impediment security by to day but have been unable to due to these challenges. setting this up has been alot larger task than i had imagined so I have to re think my implementation of DHCP on the networks running ipv4 due to the fact that they are bigger and they most like require more than one dhcp server. due to this I am attempting to run dhcp on the layer 3 switch that is located near each part of the network. this is experimenting with addressing.

security will be delayed for now until addressing is complete this is a setback in the original timing and schedule  of the project this should be finished by the end of the week to be include in progress of milestone 1 on the project design, addressing, internal connectivity and security security should have been left for milestone 2 of the project that was a mistake on my part of not quite understanding how much is involved to complete each stage of the project

the design for central dose not work for north and south campus and must be change and improved to work as the network should with all the addressing needed to function

overall a small delay is expected but I am unsure how long it could be

Monday 18 August 2014

Entry 10 networking project / connectivity and addressing

At this point In my project I am researching on firewalls and have been working on trunking, port balancing and ether channel. Have also been working on physical topology to get everything working correctly as possible. I have be attempting to setup up dhcp in all 3 campuses and the addressing for each of the routers to detain the dhcp excluded address range. as of the morning Tuesday 19 August this is where I am up to.
scheduled completion of this is due on the 29 August 2014

Wednesday 13 August 2014

Entry 9 Networking Project / connectivity

It update I have most of the design work on the topology on Packet Tracer. I have started ether channel implementation on the network for one of the campuses, it has also gotten to the stage where i must start with addressing so all together most of this week has been the basics of the project. This week has been a success to the beginning of the project. today is Thursday time is 2:39 pm date 14 August 2014 to date this part of the project. I am currently working DHCP and Ether channel next to check connectivity and begin implementing eigrp or ospf protocols. This is another update on my project progress

Tuesday 12 August 2014

Entry 8 Networking Project / Connectivity

Connectivity stage is at beginning with the completion of the design on Central and North.
addressing will be next progress is on schedule, static addressing has be attempted but for end users I have to setup a dhcp for the addressing. designing each building to its specs and the specs of the given network.
This part takes alot time designs should be finished by the end of this week.connectivity is at the base is working statically ether channel ports must be configured to check full connectivity.

Monday 11 August 2014

Entry 7 Networking project /connectivity

Today I manged to start the design of the other site starting with South Campus. This is Just a outline design this can be changed at this time this is week 4 of my project. Packet tracer is limited but at this time it seem to run alright with the basics. the network in only in the connectivity stage where with basic configurations it should have local connectivity within each campus first. This includes addressing via Dhcp either ipv4 or ipv6 where required. Then there is configuration of the ether channel links between switches, configuration of
ip phones vlan configurations and many things along those lines. next stage will be security, connectivity stage should be done by the middle of week  5 at the latest. this is need to meet with milestone one of my project. due in a few weeks.

Tuesday 5 August 2014

Entry 5 networking project

I have been coming up with my project outcomes and stages these and all estimated but a thing to keep the timetable to per week to know what i have to do when and to see if I have fallen behind or not

Entry 6 networking project

This is week 3 so far I have Finished the project proposal. I have also tested the basics of the network using packet tracer and am most to start designing the other parts of the network considering how to implement required security for the design and simulation. The beginning of  the design of the project.

Monday 4 August 2014

entry 4 Networking project

Have been working on the project plan a few hours one the last 5 days. I have nearly completed my project plan well I guess I think I have I will have to see. Got my charts almost finished for planned hours and budget. The Project Brief is almost finalised but unlikely to have any core changes to the main part.
Project planning is due the end of this week ideally and according to the requirements of the project.
This is a networking project that is design all is done in packet tracer. This is similar to the gear that I have worked on but in a much bigger scale of design. Some things that are in the project there may be time to test on there actual equipment depending on the availability and limitations on the gear and the limitations of packet tracer may mean not all requirements are possible at the designing stage. all research i plan to do is
is going to be base on that I can do all these thing and then check to see if I can or not. every requirement should be meet as much as possible as I have been told.

Thursday 31 July 2014

entry 3 networking Project

As a base to my project I have made a basic design of a stimulation.
at current i have started working on my hours and project budget to keep my project at the right stage it is only a  12 week project time at 150 hours total estimated time. I have worked out my basic timeline on form of a Gantt chart. This project in includes both prior learned knowledge and to be done research. This involves secure access to the network and connectivity to server form internal and external to the network
as in the brief.

Sunday 27 July 2014

Second entry Semester 2 Networking project

The requirement are to design a network suitable for a institute with 2 locations Central and Satellite.
central has one campus, satellite has 2 campuses. Central Is required to run IPV6 if possible. All work is simulation on Packet Tracer.
So far I have begun a budget and to design the exact implementation of all the other requirement of the project I have begun designing Central as it maybe IPV6 and is smaller to test what functions are possible on packet tracer. At this time is more a focus on budget and estimated schedule of the project as it is the second week.

Thursday 24 July 2014

First entry semester 2 Networking project / project brief

Today I got the Outline for my project from my supervisor
To begin with there is only a general outline of the project given.
It will be a worth while challenge to put my knowledge of CCNA into practice.
I have begun the basic design structure on the project.
All of my project is done on packet tracer. This is a project based on real specification for a network.

My Project brief is as follows as given by my Supervisor

A Network Design for an Institute of technology

There are to be 2 sites, Central and Satellite. The Satellite site has 2 campuses, North and South.
The sites and campuses are interconnected with Frame Relay Technology.

Over all each site is to provide connectivity to admin staff, Academic staff and students

These are the requirement both sites should have

Staff are supplied with laptops, and have a desk in a staff room.
IP phones should be available for staff and admin users.
Traffic between site and campuses should be encrypted whenever possible.
IPv6 should be used on the Central site if the equipment supports it.
The network should be protected by a firewall, and an IPS should be set up.
Extension:
Authentication of network users should be considered, if the simulation software allows it

Sites:

Centrals Requirements:

1 building of 8 floors, 30 classes, 2 admin offices
Access to the network:
wired for Admin staff (10 users for each office)
Wireless for Academic Staff and Students

Satellite Requirements :

   South Campus
5 buildings of 5 floors each, 1 office per building
Access to the network:
wired for Admin staff (3 users for each office)
Wireless for Academic Staff and Students

  North campus
6 buildings of 3 floors each, 1 office per building
  Access to the network:
wired for Admin staff (2 users for each office)
Wireless for Academic Staff and Students
1 network admin building with POP
   5 admin users

Servers required:
1 web server to be accessed by students and staff, from inside or outside the network
1 web server specific for staff (admin and academic)
1 video server (QoS?)

All of this is a general outline on what the project should have
